much easier than a tutor

Compared to paying a tutor the difference is huge, we used to pay for an hour a week and this covers everything for a fraction of the cost. Signing up took two minutes on my phone and the login has never failed. My son gets through the lessons on his own now and I just check the reports on a Sunday. Good value and no faff.

Worth a go if you have a young one

Worth it if you are after a structured reading and maths scheme for a child aged four to seven, as it covers the basics properly without feeling babyish. I have used similar apps before and this one is more organised than most, with the progress tracking actually useful for seeing where they are. The only thing I would mention is that it wants you to log in on a laptop to change some settings.

Needed something for the summer

We needed something to stop the kids going stir crazy over the summer holidays and I wasn't paying for a club. Signed up in the evening and both of them were on it the next morning. Works out at a few quid a month which is hard to argue with. Progress reports are useful for seeing where they're struggling.

way cheaper than a tutor

I had been looking at tutors near me and they were charging way more per hour than this costs for the whole month, so I was a bit sceptical at first. My little brother has been doing it every evening and he has actually started reading books on his own now, which is the biggest win for us. Setting up the account was dead quick and the app works fine on my phone too.

bought the reading pack

Bought the reading pack for my six year old and the stories are actually decent, not the usual dull rubbish. Only niggle is the audio takes a moment to load on our tablet.

Needed something for the grandchildren

We needed something to keep our grandson reading over the long summer break, as he had grown rather fidgety with paper books. The sign up was straightforward enough, though I did have to ring about a password reset. Once it was running he seemed to enjoy it, and his reading has come on a little. The price is fair but nothing special.

Cancelling was a pain

Signed up on the phone in the car, which was fine. Trying to cancel after the trial was the problem, it kept sending me back to the start of the menu and I gave up twice. Eventually got it sorted by emailing them. Not what I expected.

The subscription bit

Got the monthly subscription for my nephew and the price is fine. The annoying part was it auto renewed when I thought I'd cancelled and I only spotted it on the bank statement a fortnight later. Support sorted the refund in a couple of days, which was good. Just check the renewal date before you sign up.

the rewards are actually fun

Honestly the thing that got me was the sticker rewards, my little bro goes mental for them. He's five and he'll do a whole maths lesson just to unlock the next one. Signing up was dead quick, took like two minutes on my phone. Would 100 percent get it again for the holidays.

Bought the yearly plan

Bought the yearly plan for my little cousin. Cheaper than I expected and she likes the games bit. The problem is the sign up asked for loads of details and then the payment kept failing, took me about three goes and a chat with support before it went through. Once it was going it's fine honestly.

My son actually asks for it

Needed something to keep my five year old learning over the half term without me having to sit with him every minute. He asks to do his lessons before breakfast now, which is more than I can say for the workbooks.

The stories made the difference

The stories that come with the reading pack were the first thing I noticed, and they are far better written than I expected for a child of seven. My granddaughter reads them aloud to me now, which I did not think would happen this year. The set-up was simple and the lessons load quickly on the tablet. I am glad we went with it.

Better than the workbooks

I had been buying the paper workbooks from the high street and they were getting through them rather quickly. This works out a good deal more economical over the year and the grandchildren seem to enjoy it more than the printed pages. The one thing I found a little fiddly was finding the progress report, which took me a while to locate on the screen.

worth every penny for the kids

We needed something to keep our youngest busy during the school holidays without us paying for a tutor. The monthly subscription works out cheaper than two trips to the shops a week and she's actually been reading more. The reports tell you what she's covered so you're not guessing. Login has been smooth on both the laptop and the tablet, and cancelling was a simple click when we wanted to pause it over summer.

Lovely for my youngest

My youngest is four and has taken to the letter sounds very quickly, which I did not expect at that age. The only thing I would mention is the login timed out a couple of times when we were halfway through a lesson, and it was a bit annoying for her. Otherwise the activities are bright and sensible and she asks for them herself.

yes, get it

Yes, get it. Signed up on the app at lunch and was in within five minutes. My daughter's been on it every evening since, and the lessons are short enough she doesn't moan. Only thing is you need decent wifi or it stutters a bit. Otherwise sorted.

The reading bit is what sold me

The reading section is what sold me, it breaks the phonics down into little steps and my son can actually see when he's got something. I compared it against a few other programmes and this was the cheapest for what you get. Downloads work fine offline for the car journeys too. Would have liked a few more activities for maths but that's a small thing.

Not quite the same as a tutor

Compared with the tutor we used before, this is not as personal, since there is no one checking in on how my son is getting on. It does cover a good spread of subjects though, and it costs a fraction of what the tutor charged. He is happy enough with it, but I would still want to sit with him now and again to be sure he is getting the hang of things.

The printable worksheets

Got the printable worksheets to go with the online lessons, and they print nicely on plain paper. The only small gripe is that a few of the sheets split over two pages.

About ABCmouse

ABCmouse is an online educational platform that offers a structured learning programme for young children, covering reading, maths, science, art and music. Its content is delivered through a subscription-based website and app, with activities, games, e-books and printable materials designed for pre-school and early primary-age pupils. The platform is aimed at parents and home educators who want guided, self-paced learning that children can follow independently on a computer or tablet.

The company is particularly known for its step-by-step learning path, which adapts the sequence of lessons to each child's progress and gives parents a view of how their child is developing. ABCmouse operates primarily online, so families access the material from home rather than through a physical store, and it is also used by some schools as a supplementary resource.
